One place to buy really nice new baby cards to congratulate new parents and welcome the new baby is Papyrus. They have stores in 170 locations and you can order directly from their website.
Many of their new baby cards are made by hand and include materials that you will not find on typical greeting cards. For example, two of the cards include very small baby outfits on hangers. The card for a new baby boy has a pair of tiny, blue, cloth overalls on a miniature clothes hanger, suspended from a blue ribbon. The card for a new baby girl has a tiny, pink, cloth dress suspended from a pink ribbon. Most of their New Baby Cards have some kind of moveable, three dimensional object added to them and / or include a cloth fabric, stitching, or fringe. You can also choose from some pre-written new baby sayings or insert your own.
Sending Papyrus New Baby Cards will show that you put time and thought into your message. Your new baby cards will stand out from all the rest and will probably be displayed and remembered for quite a while. These new baby cards are a high class way to welcome a new arrival.

Selecting a Gift for New Baby
Posted on January 8, 2008
Filed Under Discounts on Products and Supplies for New Baby, New Baby Cards & Birth Announcements | 2 Comments
After sending out the new baby cards, parents are going to expect a response from each recipient, usually in the form of a gift. (We didn’t make the rules, we just report on them.) Some good ideas that generally work well for new baby gifts are: baby clothes, diapers, baby supplies, heirloom gifts, and homemade meals.
New Baby Clothes - You can select a nice outfit for the new child. Most baby gifts come in the 0 - 6 month range. New babies get so many of these clothes that sometimes they can only wear a particular outfit 2 or 3 times before the baby outgrows the outfit. So, if you decide to purchase a new outfit, select in the 6 - 12 month size range. The baby will be able to wear the outfit longer before outgrowing it. Or, instead of a single, nice outfit, some parents appreciate the more practical gift of several plain onesies. Onesies are body suits for infants. They usually have snaps to open between the legs for easy diaper access, and they’re made of durable fibers which can handle stains and frequent washing. And, chances are that a pack of 6 onesies will get a lot more use than a velvet jumper with a duck embroidered on it!
Diapers - A large supply of diapers is always a useful gift for a new baby. It is not a glamorous gift but it is useful. You can purchase several boxes for the baby and parents to use over the course of a couple of weeks. These are an excellent way to help the parents have new baby savings.
Baby Supplies - Other useful gifts for the new baby are: baby bathtub, baby bathtub ring, Swaddle Me Blanket, Happiest Baby on the Block DVD, blankets, a bouncer seat, and an exersaucer each are useful baby supplies that make nice gifts.
Heirloom Gifts - Purchasing an heirloom gift is also an option. This type gift may be a silver spoon, a silver cup, silver baby rattle, or a silver piggy bank. Additionally, it may be a ceramic piggy bank with a silver dollar in it to kick off the new baby savings account.
Homemade Meals - The first couple of weeks of a new baby’s life and the life of the baby’s parents is very hectic and accompanied by little sleep and much stress over the care of the baby. If you live close by and can cook fairly well, taking a homemade meal or two to the new family will be a meaningful gift. To dress this gift up a bit, wrap the food in a baby blanket, put it in a decorative basket, print a menu out on decorative paper or cardstock, and include the new baby card you selected. This will make the meal look much more appealing. But, honestly, the parents will be so glad you thought of them and brought them food that they probably will not care what it looks like when it is delivered.
There are also several places online that you can choose Unique and Personalized Baby Gifts.
Choose one of these and you probably won’t go wrong.

E-Card Options for New Baby Cards
Posted on January 8, 2008
Filed Under New Baby Cards & Birth Announcements | Leave a Comment
In our previous posts (Custom Printed New Baby Cards & Do It Yourself New Baby Cards) we gave some options for buying or making your New Baby Cards / Birth Announcements. But, if both money and time are major considerations for you, then using e-cards to announce the arrival of your new baby may be a good route for you. Also, if you are concerned about the environmental impact of printed mail, then selecting e-cards for your new baby cards may be your preferred method of delivery. And some people like to use e-new baby cards to quickly let friends and family know the new baby has arrived and then they follow up with a more traditional snail mail card later.
E-cards are a fast and efficient way to get the message out and give the details of your new baby’s birth to friends and family. New parents can even send e-cards out right from the hospital shortly after the baby’s birth. If you plan to do this, it’s a good idea to select the company, style of card, and any new baby sayings you want to use before the baby is born. This way, you can just pull up the website, type in the appropriate information, and press send. Because what new parent wants to spend hours digging through various websites to find the best new baby cards when they could be spending that time with the child and family?
There are several different companies that provide options for Electronic New Baby Cards. Some of the companies offer the cards for free and some charge a small fee. Here are a few companies that offer these types of e-cards:
www.conservation.org
www.freecustomcards.com
123greetings.com
birthdaycards.com
bluemountain.com
usagreetings.com
After you send the e-card to announce the birth of your new baby, you may still want to send more traditional new baby cards. The advantages of sending hard copies card are that the family and friends are able to keep your baby’s birth announcement. Also, you can put the hard copy in your baby book. Finally, you can frame the announcement to hang on the wall in the nursery. As your baby grows, he or she will be certain to want to look at the birth announcement.

Custom Printed New Baby Cards

In an earlier post (Do It Yourself New Baby Cards) we gave some tips and directions on Do It Yourself New Baby Cards and Birth Announcements. Making the new baby cards yourself can save a good bit of money, and if you’re crafty it can be fun. But for those of you who have no arts and crafts skill or just don’t want to mess around with making cards while you’re taking care of an infant, you may want to go with custom printed birth announcements / new baby cards that you order and have delivered to your door.
There are many options for purchasing custom printed new baby cards. Usually the cards will include a photo of the new baby. You can generally choose to have your new baby cards printed on fine paper such as card stock and vellum or they can just be printed on glossy photo paper.
When purchasing new baby cards that are custom printed, there are many, many, many different styles to go along with the various types of paper available. Some of the styles are traditional and some are very trendy. If you’re the type of person who likes to examine every option before making a decision, the process could take a while so get comfortable.
If you select a photo paper card style, one company that is particularly good is Photo Affections. This company gives an online proof for you to view before printing your new baby cards. The company also checks that your spelling, grammar, and formatting are correct. If you are selecting a photo paper card style, you will not go wrong with Photo Affections.
If you select a cardstock paper style for your new baby cards, one company that is particularly good is Naptime Productions. This company has many styles to choose from including allowing a photo of your child or artwork. You can pick a photo that is full color. You may also pick a photo that is black and white. They will even touch-up the photo for you (if you like) to give the best appearance possible. And, for an additional fee, Naptime Productions will assemble the card for you rather than you assembling it yourself after delivery. The company’s work is high quality. If you select Naptime Productions for your New Baby Cards, you will be extremely pleased with the quality of their work.
One final option to consider when choosing your new baby cards is whether the company will allow you to order the envelopes prior to the birth. Photo Affections does allow this option. This option allows you to address the envelopes while you are still waiting for the baby to be born and before those sleep deprived days and nights roll around. That way when the finished cards arrive, all you have to do is put them in the envelopes and drop them in the mail. When you’ve got your hands full with your new baby you’ll be glad you handled that step ahead of time!

Do It Yourself New Baby Cards
Posted on January 7, 2008
Filed Under New Baby Cards & Birth Announcements | Leave a Comment
When your new baby arrives there are many decisions to make and many things to purchase. One thing you are almost certain to want to do as a new parent is to announce the birth of your baby to family and friends. If money is an issue and you do not have a lot of people to send the announcements to then making your own new baby cards might be the way to go. Also, if you are a bit handy with scrapbooking supplies or if you have a desire to learn how to scrapbook your new baby’s life, making your own new baby cards might be the way to go too.
If your baby has not yet been born, you can get a jumpstart on the new baby cards by making them ahead of the birth and then adding a photo and details after the baby is born.
Below are directions for an option you might like to try:
Ideally you will want some basic scrapbook supplies (listed below with links). They will make the job faster, easier, and more consistent.
1. Paper Trimmer or Scissors - I prefer the Fiskars 12-Inch Euro Paper Trimmer but there are several others that are good alternatives depending on the amount of money you want to spend and the number of pages you want to cut at one time. Obviously, the more pages the paper trimmer cuts at one time the faster your new baby cards will be made and the more time you will have to spend with your new baby.
2. Cardstock or Heavy Paper - You will want to purchase ample cardstock in the color of your choice. The cardstock of choice for most serious scrapbookers is Bazzill, which comes in a wide variety of colors and textures. However, if you are just starting out scrapbooking or you want to purchase less expensive cardstock most any acid-free lignin-free cardstock will work fine. You will need to have several colors such as white, baby blue colors, baby pink colors, non-gender specific baby colors such as green and yellow, or an assortment pack of colored cardstock to make your New Baby Cards.
White - Cardstock 12”x12” Bazzill 50/Pkg-Bazzill White
Baby Blue - Cardstock 12”X12” Bazzill Coastal
Baby Pink - Cardstock 12″X12″ Bazzill 50PK-Emma
Assortment Pack - 12 x12 Cardstock Pack 100/Pkg - Assorted
3. Hole Puncher - Fiskars Hand Punch, 1/8″ Circle
4. Colorful Ribbon in colors to coordinate with the cardstock (used to tie off the top of the New Baby Cards.) Here are some links to samples:
5. Photo of the New Baby - You’ll want it to be about 3¾” x 3″ to fit properly on the new baby cards.
6. Black Pen or Computer Printer
7. Glue or Double-Sided Tape - scrapbookers use adhesive dispensers like this one Mono Adhesive With Dispenser,Permanent, 1/3″x472″ (TOM62201)
8. Envelopes (at least 4 ½ x 5 ¾ inches in size) - Columbian Envelope / Invitational Envelopes, #5-1/2, 24 lb., 4-3/8″x5-3/4″, White / WEVCO198
DIRECTIONS:
Using the paper trimmer (or scissors), cut the cardstock to 4 ¼ x 5 ½ inches.
Cut a second piece (different color) of cardstock to 4 x 5 ¼ inches.
Glue the smaller piece of cardstock onto the first (centered).
Crop the photo to 3 ¾ x 3 inches and glue the photo to cover the top two thirds of the card.
Print with a computer or handwrite with a pen the details of your new baby’s birth on white (or light) cardstock.
Cut the white cardstock with the details of the birth to 1 ½ x 3 ¾ inches and glue it to your new baby cards below the photo.
Punch 2 holes above the photo.
String the ribbon through the two holes and tie a bow.
Repeat for as many new baby cards as you need.
Your New Baby Cards are complete.

Saving Money on Diapers and Wipes
Posted on January 4, 2008
Filed Under Discounts on Products and Supplies for New Baby, Uncategorized | 1 Comment
In the first three months after we brought our newborn twins home from the hospital, we were so delirious from sleep deprivation that we blew an enormous amount of money for speed and convenience. One of us would wander into the store with only one eye open, severe bed-head (not that we had been sleeping), various unidentified stains on our shirts, unmatched socks, pants possibly on backwards, shoes untied, and mumbling unintelligible words and phrases under our breath. We would find our way to the diaper aisle (all the way at the back of the freakin’ store) and use both arms to shovel cases of diapers and wipes into the cart. At the time, we had no idea how much we were paying and we were too tired to care. So we would go through the checkout and allow the cashier to suck unknown amounts of money out of our account.
Obviously that is not the most intelligent or frugal way to get diapers and wipes for your new baby (in our case new babies). And, if you just don’t care about New Baby Savings and want the fastest, cleanest, and easiest tools for baby poo removal, knock yourself out. (We won’t judge you as we have been there ourselves!) But there are, of course, much more economical ways to take care of the inevitable flow of number 1’s and number 2’s that your new baby will produce. Using cloth (reusable) diapers and making your own wipes at home are your best bets for saving tremendous amounts of money.
We found some places on the web to order cloth diapers in bulk (Chinese Prefold Cloth Diaper : Small (up to 15 lbs)). Ideally you will want to have about 50 diapers per baby bottom. This way you can do a load of laundry every two days and not run short. But you can make it with fewer diapers if you need to. You’ll just have to wash them more often. And more loads of laundry mean fewer new baby savings.
Swish the soiled diapers in the toilet to get the bulky matter out and then store them in a large, airtight, plastic container (like a Safety 1st Simple Step Diaper Pail) to trap the hideous toxic stench until you are ready to put them in the laundry. You may also want to get some Diaper Pail Deodorizers (6pk)
to supress the steamy blast of gak that will hit you in the face when you open the pail. Be sure to wash the diapers in HOT water with detergent (we always used Tide Free HE 2x Concentrated Liquid Detergent, 64 Load Bottle (Pack of 4)
)and a little bit of bleach to sanitize them. We also recently found a blog post about making your own laundry detergent on the cheap. Click here to read “Do it yourself laundry detergent?” on Saving Money.
Cloth diapers are very thick and absorbent. But they do not hold as much as disposable diapers. {For example right on the box of Pampers Swaddlers, Size 2, Economy Plus Pack, 184 ct for new baby it says one diaper will hold 12 to 18 pounds. We found that to be a little extreme so we never waited for that much to be in the diaper before changing it.
} So with cloth diapers you’re going to need to change them more often.
You can also get plastic or rubber covers to put over the outside of the diaper. These keep the contents from leaking out and getting on clothes, furniture, and most importantly you. The downside is that they create a sort of greenhouse effect inside the diaper and can lead to more diaper rash if you’re not diligent. So, again, check and change often.
The bottom line is that cloth diapers do have their drawbacks. But if you can handle the moderate inconveniences your New Baby Savings will add up to several hundred dollars per year.
We will address homemade diaper wipes in a future post.
