New Baby Sayings from a Dog-Tired Daddy

OK, here are some new baby sayings I created in the first few days, weeks, and months after we brought our new baby twins home from the hospital. We’ll call it New Baby Sayings from a Dog-Tired Daddy.
On the first night, they were awake ALL NIGHT LONG, so of course, we were too. Then, just as the first hint of sunlight made its way into the nursery, they both fell into a deep sleep. Exhausted and delirious I walked downstairs and said to my in-laws, “They spent the whole night sucking fluid out of my wife and then went to sleep as soon as the sun rose. I think they’re vampires!”
When you’ve got new babies for some reason you just get a real big kick out of making them laugh. The proliferation of laughing baby videos on You Tube is proof of that. So, in my sleep deprived state, I came up with a whole bunch of new baby sayings that made the babies and me laugh while my wife just gazed at me with a look that said, “I love you but you’re no comedian.” Here are two that I can remember:
When changing a messy diaper I would say in a dramatic voice as if I were a WWII bombardier releasing a load of explosives over Germany, “Poooooops Away!!!” The kids had no idea what it meant but they laughed hysterically and so did I.
When trying to get one of them to burp, I would hold the kid on my chest with their arms draped over my left shoulder, and while patting them on the back and doing gentle, deep knee bends and hopping up and down I would chant, “Gimee a burpy urpy wurpy! Gimee a burpy urpy wurpy!” Again, no real wit involved, but to an infant it’s comedy gold.
As they got a little bit older and we began feeding them baby food, they quickly learned that they could extort goofy entertainment from me by refusing to open their mouths for each bite unless I performed to their satisfaction. My repertoire included several silly faces, a variety of aborigine-like clicking noises, my rendition of the Wiggles’ “Hot Potato” or “Fruit Salad” songs, dog and cat imitations, and saying, “For the love of all that is pure and holy I beg you to eat this food quickly so we can all take a nap!!”
When I discovered how quiet and sleepy they became when swaddled very tightly, I quickly became the family expert on this baby wrapping technique. I held popular and widely attended seminars on the proper method for securing a squirming baby in a snug little blanket. And I still refer to a well swaddled baby as a “Baby Burrito.”
But perhaps the most memorable new baby saying that is burned indelibly into my brain stems from an event which is so horrifically yucky that I will spare you the finer details. Suffice it to say that the incident in which they were unattended for a few minutes and simultaneously discovered how to remove and vigorously swing their soiled diapers will always be known as “Poopapalooza!”

A baby will make love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, bankroll smaller, home happier, clothes shabbier, the past forgotten, and the future worth living for.
~Author Unknown
When the first baby laughed for the first time, the laugh broke into a thousand pieces and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies. And now when every new baby is born its first laugh becomes a fairy. So there ought to be.
~James Matthew Barrie
Having a baby changes the way you view your in-laws. I love it when they come to visit now. They can hold the baby and I can go out.
~Matthew Broderick
